Voice AI and Saudi PDPL: what compliance teams ask for

The questions that come up in every Saudi enterprise security review, and how to have the answers ready before the review starts.

In Saudi enterprise procurement, the compliance review is usually the longest part of the cycle. The questions are predictable. Having documented answers ready is the difference between a two-week review and a two-quarter one.

Where does the data live?

Expect to answer precisely where audio, transcripts, and derived data are stored and processed, and which of those can be kept in-Kingdom. Answer at the level of each data type — a single blanket statement about hosting is rarely accepted.

How long is it kept?

Retention should be defined separately for audio, transcripts, and metadata, with a documented deletion path for each. The default answer compliance teams want is the shortest period that still supports quality review and dispute resolution — not indefinite retention.

Is the caller told?

Disclosure that the caller is speaking to an automated system, and consent for recording where it applies, belongs in the opening seconds of the call and in your written policy. This is one of the first things a reviewer will test by simply calling the line.

Who can access recordings?

  • Role-based access with a named owner for each role.
  • An audit log of who listened to what, and when.
  • A documented process for handling a data subject request end to end.
  • A defined path for removing a caller's data on request.

What happens when the model changes?

Reviewers increasingly ask about change control: who approves a change to the agent's behaviour, how it is tested before it reaches live calls, and how you would roll it back. A short written change process answers this better than any architecture diagram.

Prepare the pack before the first meeting

A data flow diagram, a retention table, a disclosure script, an access matrix, and a change control note will cover most of what is asked. Bringing that pack to the first meeting typically removes an entire round of the review.
